Industrial and defence engineering company DCD Group, which has rebranded as DCD Defence, has launched its new light tactical vehicle the Bushbuck, which is designed to be light and efficient to meet military and defence needs in Africa and beyond.

The 7 t, 168 kW, 4 X 4 Bushbuck, which can also take a payload of 1.3 t, has a top speed of 130 km/h and a range of 640 km. Its armoured super structure is modular, to enable it to be easily repaired or reconfigured.

The newly rebranded company launched the new vehicle at the African Aerospace and Defence conference, in Tshwane, on September 16.

The vehicle has Nato Standardisation Agreement 4569 Level 1 blast protection and European Standard EN 1522 Level B6 ballistic protection.

Its variants include single cab; double cab; armoured personnel carrier; command vehicle; multipurpose vehicle; cargo truck; maintenance vehicle; reconnaissance vehicle; weapons carrier; and ambulance. It is available in left- or right-hand drive.

DCD also provides training, service and maintenance for clients, said DCD Defence acting CEO Catherine Pearson.

“The vehicle is light, mobile and versatile, while the quality and reliability DCD is known for is present,” she said.

Under DCD chief engineer Johannes van Schalkwyk, the design team aimed to create a balanced vehicle that met demands for greater efficiency and smaller sizes while providing superior protection for soldiers and personnel, said DCD Defence technical adviser Koos Joubert.

“DCD has stepped up in answer to the call made during the Defence Industry Lekgotla in July for the defence industry to reclaim its lead role in innovation and development in South Africa,” said DCD chairperson Chris Nkuna.

“The vehicle unveiled today is an expression of our commitment to building capabilities and to the wider defence industry in Africa and the world,” he added.
